In 1947, the exhibition Young Artists between the Rhine and The Weser (rivers Rhine and Weser) laid the foundation stone for the artist group junger westen.

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of its founding, seven RuhrKunstMuseums commemorated the work of these artists in a series of exhibitions spanning cities. The group of artists was dissolved amicably after 10 years, the art prize junger westen (young west), which was created at the same time, continues to be advertised every two years. In the exhibition (Ernst Hermanns and six prizewinners from seventy years.) the work of Ernst Hermann was placed in relation to works by six other prizewinners from the 70-year history of the art prize.
